An island is more than its coastline
A beach may bring you to Phuket, but it need not be the whole story. Set aside some time for the island’s urban life: the shopfronts, the cafés, the streets where people are doing ordinary things far from a sun lounger.
Approach the old town on foot, in manageable pieces. Stop to look at a doorway or a row of windows. A streetscape can reveal the many influences that have shaped a place without requiring you to rush from one named attraction to another.
Let lunch lead the way
Give food a place in the day’s plan. Look at what is being cooked, ask about unfamiliar dishes, and choose a meal that makes you curious. If you have been staying near the beach, a different neighbourhood can introduce you to a different side of island life.
Allow for the midday heat by making a long lunch or a café stop part of the outing. A slower walk with a comfortable break is usually more rewarding than forcing another hour into an overfull schedule.
Return to the sea with fresh eyes
There is no need to choose between the town and the beach. They belong to the same island, and the contrast is part of the pleasure. Spend one day looking closely at streets and another doing very little by the water.
Choose outings that fit current conditions, and ask local operators about changes before setting off. A flexible plan lets you enjoy the island as you find it, rather than as a photograph told you it should be.
